Informational Interviewing

An informational interview is an opportunity to gather information about an occupation from someone already in the occupation. It is important when conducting an informational interview to let the person know that you are considering a job or occupational change and are researching occupations in order to learn more about the career. People generally enjoy speaking about themselves and their occupation and are often happy to help.

At the end of every informational interview it is usually a good idea to ask the person you are interviewing if they can refer you to someone else in the field or a related field. It is also a good idea to request to be able to contact this person again in the future if you have any additional questions.

Always follow-up the interview with a thank you note.
