Investigative Statement Analysis This course will expose the officer to written statement analysis with the primary focus on suspect, victim, and witness statements. Course Requirements: The student will be required to have access to the book “Investigative Discourse Analysis” by Don Rabon. This book is available from Carolina Academic Press http://www.cap-press.com/ for $17.50. The instructor will have a few copies of the book for loan during the course and the students may purchase one of these from the instructor at cost as long as they last. DATE: August 18, 40 Hours Fraud Investigation This course provides the officer with the knowledge to conduct a basic fraud investigative including: understanding and applying the statutory violations involved; evidence requirements in fraud cases, tracking the money and benefits and more. Special Concern: The student will be required to use a fraud case from their agency and will develop an investigative plan from that case that will be presented on line to the class. Course This course is the State mandated certification course for detention officers and will meet five to six days a week. Interested students should contact Dianne Davis for information: Dianne Davis 254-1921 Ext 841 Ddavis@abtech.edu NEXT COURSE: October 6, 2008 Classes will be scheduled this Spring and Fall, contact Dianne Davis for scheduling information.
Basic Radar Certification This is the state regulated 40 hour basic RADAR certification course. Students must provide a RADAR equipped patrol car to complete this course and a state examination will complete this course. The course is made up of classroom and field exercises.

General Instructor Certification - THIS CLASS IS FULL! Upon successful completion officers will be certified General Instructors. This course is a demanding two week school which will require “after hours” time outside of the course schedule for officers to prepare course work and study for a state exam to be delivered on the final day of class. Officers will need department approval on department letterhead in order to be enrolled in this course. Special Requirements: Must meet State minimum qualifications.

Close Quarter Combat /Vehicle Assault for Patrol Training scheduled for September 3 and 4, 2008 at Asheville Police Department Firing Range from 0800 to 1800 hours. Ammunition needed is estimated at 400 rounds per person. This training will consist of drills building up to close quarter combat with handgun, Shooting from awkward positions, one hand shooting, shooting while moving with handgun, single officer driver side and passenger side approaches, multiple officer vehicle stop. The FBI Statistics report that the majority of officers are killed within 3 to 5 feet and on vehicle assaults. This training is taking the street to the range instead of taking the range to the street. Equipment that will be needed but not limited to are hearing protection, eye protection, hat, sunscreen, knee pads, liquid for hydration, at a minimum 3 magazines.
Verbal Judo In the Verbal Judo course the student will learn to effectively communicate through tactical language designed to achieve their professional goals. The student will understand that training makes words into a powerful tool to persuade people to voluntarily comply with an Officers instruction. Verbal Judo will give Officers the tactics they need to find solutions to potentially difficult situations and communicate with difficult people without shaming, blaming, or manipulating. It will also show Officers how to safely take action when words fail.
Radar, Lidar, and/or Vascar Re-Certification This course is for currently certified radar, lidar, or radar/vascar operators who need to re-certify. Officers should bring their radar course notebooks and practice their clocks prior to class. Special Requirements: Study and practice prior to class.

Telecommunicators Certification Course This course is for persons who will be or are assigned to a telecomunicator division within a law enforcement agency. Students will need a sponsorship letter on department letterhead in order to be considered for enrolment. Basic Carbine Operators Course This course is designed for officers who are new to carbine style firearms and is geared to teach the basic principles to operate a carbine rifle. Students will need the following: baseball style hat, hearing protection, eye protection, ballistic vest (if available), carbine rifle, minimum of two magazines, and three hundred rounds of practice ammunition.
Basic Sniper Indoctrination This course is a highly demanding course designed for officers who are currently assigned or soon to be assigned to special response teams in the role of sniper/spotter. The course will cover the basics of a sniper/spotter role and disciplines of a forward observer. Officers will need the following equipment: Baseball style hat, hearing protection, eye protection, a long range rifle, 250 rounds of ammunition and a weapon cleaning kit. If available then officers should bring a rangefinder and spotting scope. Rifle qualifications will be discussed on the first day of the course.
Basic Ballistic Shield Operators Course TBA
Taser Certification This class introduces the officer to the proper use and after care of the M26 and X26 Tasers. The course will examine the history of Taser use and proper application and each officer will be introduced to the effects of being Tased and have the opportunity to fire a Taser during this training. TBA
