Class Schedule

We offer classes at a variety of sites across Asheville and Buncombe and Madison Counties. See our class schedule for class location and times. Most of our classes are offered in a tutorial setting in which students work in materials specific to their academic needs and at their own pace. Instructors rotate between students assisting with the student’s comprehension of the material and guiding them in their progress toward completion of each of the five GED tests.

Small Group Instruction Classes

Students may be referred to our Small Group Instruction Classes which meet at specific times. These classes are comprised of a limited number of students with a designated instructor and may include more directed study. Placement in these classes is by instructor/staff referral only. Study materials are provided to students for in-classroom use only.

Skillstutor Online Program

We also offer Skillstutor, an on-line study option for the GED which can be used in conjunction with on-site testing to support progression toward the GED.

Orientation or Intake Session

The process for admission into the Adult Basic Education or GED Preparation program requires attendance at an Orientation or Intake Session. The Orientation session for admission for studying in the Pines Building at the Asheville AB Tech campus is offered twice every Wednesday and is approximately 3 hours in length. Prior registration is required. We regret that we are unable to accommodate walk-ins for orientation on the Asheville campus. To register for an orientation session, please call 254-1921 ext. 433. Intake sessions are offered at our other campuses and off-campus sites at scheduled times. See the schedule to determine if pre-registration is required for a specific site.

Once a student has completed orientation/intake, he or she will meet with an instructor for an advisement session in which they together, the instructor and student, will determine a course of study. The student will then attend classes as his or her schedule permits, or as assigned if referred to a Small Group Instruction class.

GED Testing

The GED is comprised of a series of tests to determine knowledge level across topics. We generally recommend students work toward one test at a time, and we start all students in Reading. We have found that strengthening their reading comprehension serves to help strengthen students in all other areas as well.
