Nursing Assistant
To be eligible for admission to the Fall 2008 Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing programs, applicants will be required to hold a documented current credential as a Nursing Assistant I (formerly CNA I) from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation by June 15, 2008. Nurse Aide Level I helps to prepare for this requirement.
Registration for Nurse Aide I occurs on a monthly basis. Classes will be eligible for registration two months prior to class start date. If you are interested in admission into the Nursing Assistant I program at A-B Tech, call at 254-1921, Ext. 878, 332 or 5860, or visit www.abtech.edu/ce.
Registration for Nurse Aide Level I and II
Students must register in person for NA I or NA II classes
- 1. Bring with you the negative results of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. This test is available at a doctor’s office or a County Health Department (for a minimal charge) and takes 48 - 72 hours to be completed.
- 2. Make sure you have a picture ID such as a US driver's license or US Passport.
- 3. Make sure you have a United States Social Security Card issued by the Social Security Administration. This must be the actual card, not a photocopy. If you do not have your original card, you can apply for a duplicate at the Social Security Administration Office which is located off Chunns Cove Road in the Center Park Office Complex on Piney Mountain Road. The name on your picture ID and the social security card must match.

Bring a written authorization for payment from your organizational sponsor or the employer who will pay for your class. - 5. If you are 16 or 17, complete an A-B Tech Minor Permission Form www.abtech.edu/ce/nainfo.htm. You must bring the completed form with you when you register.
- 6. Students must register in person only and bring all the requested items listed above (photocopies and originals). Registration is held either the 1st Tuesday or Wednesday of each month: 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM in the Pines Building, Room 226 or 228. No fax or online registration is available for NA I classes.

Nurse Aide Level I
This course provides basic training in the entry-level caregiving skills needed to work as a Nursing Assistant in various healthcare settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, or private homes. Cost includes an insurance fee of $1.30. Additional information needed for registration is available on our website at www.abtech.edu/ce, choose the Nursing Assistant option. Madison NA-I classes may register only at Madison Campus. The textbook, Thomson's North Carolina Nurse Aide I, approximately $64, can be purchased at the Asheville, Enka, or Madison Campus bookstore. Madison Campus
Nurse Aide Level II
This course offers short-term training to move NAs at Level I to more complex nursing tasks under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Requirements for admission are: Current NA I listing in North Carolina, six months to a year of work experience, proof of high school diploma or GED, proof of immunizations, and a letter of recommendation from an RN. The textbook, approximately $50, can be purchased at the Asheville or Enka Campus bookstore. Will include some Saturday daytime clinicals mid-way through class. Please call 254-1921, Ext. 878 or 332 for a list of all required materials. Students cannot register online for Nursing Assistant courses. (180 hrs)

This course is for the NA I whose state listing has expired or Nurse Aides who have moved to North Carolina. The course consists of review and skills testing to assess the student's knowledge of North Carolina's required skills. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the graduate will be eligible to apply for the North Carolina Nurse Aide Competency Testing. Students need to have completed the Health Care Provider BLS CPR class prior to registration for this course. Please call 254-1921, Ext. 878, 5861 or 332, to be placed on the mailing list to receive information regarding registration requirements and procedures. The textbook, Success for the Nursing Assistant by E. Heinze, approximately $27, can be purchased at the Asheville, or Enka Campus bookstore. Students cannot register online for NA courses. (24 hrs)

This course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified as a Medication Aide. The course will cover the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics will include medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology, and legal implications. Upon completion, students should be able to take the competency exam and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry.
