Nursing Assistant

To be eligible for admission to the Fall 2010 Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing programs, applicants will be required to hold a documented current credential as a Nurse Aide I from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation and provide a Certificate of Completion from a state approved Nurse Aide training program or a transcript showing satisfactory completion of a state approved Nurse Aide training program by January 29, 2010. Classes fill up very quickly. Class size is limited to 20 students. Madison Campus class size is limited to 10 students. Our next registration for Spring 2010 Nurse Aide I Classes will be held on the Enka Campus December 2, 2009. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM on a first come, first serve basis. Both Day (8:30-3 PM) and Evening (5-8PM or 6-9pm depending on choice) classes will be available. Offered classes will be on our Asheville, Enka, and Goodwill campuses. Depending on class choice, the classes are set to begin approximately mid January 2010. Be sure to check our information line (828) 254-1921 Ex 7600 for updated registration information. Registration for Nurse Aide Level I and II

Students must register in person for NA I or NA II classes

• • 1. Bring with you the negative results of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. This test is available at a doctor's office, urgent care or a County Health Department. It may take up to 72 hours for results to come back.(approximate charge of $20.00).
    2. Make sure you have a government issued (non-expired) picture ID such as a drivers license.
    3. Make sure you have a United States Social Security Card issued by the Social Security Administration. This must be the actual card, not a photocopy. If you do not have your original card, you can apply for a duplicate at the Social Security Administration Office which is located off Chunns Cove Road in the Center Park Office Complex on Piney Mountain Road. The name on your picture ID and the social security card must match. The Social Security card will be required for state testing, but will not be required at registration.

    4. Tuition: $176.25 - Payment Options:

    • Students should bring in correct and exact cash of $176.25
    • Write a check to A-B Tech for $176.25
    • Credit or Debit Card accepted, with exception of AMEX
    • Bring a written authorization for payment from your organizational sponsor or the employer who will pay for your class

    5. Due to the demand of the Nurse Assistant classes, minors (those between 16-18 years of age), will be admitted to class per college policy. Exceptions may be made for minors with a High School Diploma or GED at the time of class. For further information please contact 254-1921 Ext 332 or Ext 5860.
    6. Finally, bring all the requested items listed above in person only.

    8. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Aide I course, students must take the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry Exam provided by Pearson Vue (cost $96.00) to be placed on the North Carolina NA I registry. Scheduling this exam may take 2-4 weeks after completion of the course. Students will be given assistance when filling out testing applications prior to course completion. Regional Nurse Aide I test sites in Western North Carolina include A-B Tech, Blue Ridge Tech, and sites in Shelby and Morganton.

    In-Home Aide

    Prepares an individual to work in a home setting with clients that require minimal hands on assistance. Course topics include communication skills, basic nutrition and client hygiene (40 hrs) Class will be available if there is enough interest. For more information, call 828-254-1921, Ext. 878

    Medication Aide

    This course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified as a Medication Aide. Students must already be listed as a current Nurse Aide in North Carolina and hold a High School diploma or GED prior to taking the course. The course will cover the six rights of medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology and legal implications. Upon completion, students can take the competency exam, offered by Pearson Vue, and will be able to demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry.     Nurse Aide Level I Refresher

    This course is for the NA I whose state listing has expired or Nurse Aides who have moved to North Carolina. The course consists of review and skills testing to assess the student's knowledge of North Carolina's required skills. Upon satisfactory completion of the course the graduate will be eligible to apply for the North Carolina Nurse Aide Competency Testing. Students need to have completed the Health Care Provider BLS CPR class prior to registration for this course. The textbook, Success for the Nursing Assistant by E. Heinze, approximately $35, can be purchased at the Asheville Campus bookstore. Students cannot register online for NA courses. (24 hrs)

    Nurse Aide Level I

    This course provides basic training in the entry-level caregiving skills needed to work as a Nursing Assistant in various healthcare settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, or private homes. Cost includes an insurance fee of $1.25. Additional information needed for registration is available on our web site at www.abtech.edu/ce, choose the Nursing Assistant option. Madison NA-I classes may register only at Madison Site. The textbooks, Nurse Aide Handbook , approximately $6, and Thomson's North Carolina Nurse Aide I , approximately $75, can be purchased at the Asheville Campus, Enka Site, or Madison Site bookstore. Students cannot register online for NA-I courses. (146 hrs)

    Nurse Aide Level II

    This course offers short-term training to move NAs at Level I to more complex nursing tasks under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Requirements for admission are: Current NA I listing in North Carolina plus experience, proof of high school diploma or GED, proof of immunizations, and a letter of recommendation from an RN. The textbook, approximately $100, can be purchased at the Asheville Campus or Enka Site bookstore. Will include some Saturday daytime clinical mid-way through class.
