National Alcohol Screening Event Draws Participants To Coman Center

David Robel and Eric Froiland

David Robel, Hotel and Restaurant Management student, pours a non-alcoholic drink while Eric Froiland, Hotel and Restaurant Management student, watches his technique at the National Alcohol Screening Event April 9 in the Coman Student Center.

A-B Tech's Counseling Department sponsored its annual free Alcohol Screening Event April 9 in the Coman Student Center. More than 100 participants filled out surveys, according to Peggy Bulla, career counselor.

"The event is not just for students to see if they're indulging too much," Bulla said. "It's also a chance to see if family members or friends they are concerned about may have a problem. We had 12 community clinicians assisting the entire morning. They volunteered and were from all over Buncombe County and two were from Henderson County. There was no way we could have provided this without the community help."

"I think it's a great opportunity to students, staff and faculty to look at their alcohol behavior and evaluate where they are at that time with their drinking," said Annie Clingenpeel, Disabilities Services Coordinator. "It makes us all a little more health conscious and it makes a healthy campus."

The Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa, Emergency Medical Science students, Hotel and Restaurant Management students, and Plant Operations contributed their time and talents to the program.

Clinicians and their workplaces that assisted in the screening were Deborah Rios of Mountain Treatment Center, John Williams and Giselle Bango of ARP/Phoenix Treatment and Prevention Services, Michelle M. Baldwin of Crossroads/Phoenix Treatment and Prevention Services, Jerry Bryson, Tom Preston and Linda Holt of Mountain Area Recovery Center, Kriya Lendzion and Cay Fulop of October Road Inc., Sandra Layton of Parkway Behavioral Health, Carl Greenwald of Western North Carolina Community Health Services and Kathy Wunder of Asheville Institute.

Local businesses that donated door prizes and products were Wink Salon and Boutique, Sensibilities Day Spa, Chef-In-Motion, Citi Stop Dunkin Donuts, Golden Ray Food Service, Atlanta Bread Company and the College's Therapeutic Massage students.
