Incubator Tenant Builds Home With BioBased Insulation

Small Business Center/Incubator tenant Steve DeWeese, owner of Endless Supply Company, LLC, traveled to Loudon, Tenn., and sprayed a Habitat for Humanity home with BioBased Insulation. The home was part of a test by Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Buildings Technology Center. The results showed that BioBased Insulation was more effective than fiberglass in sealing a home's building envelope and increasing energy efficiency.

Janice Brumit, wife of A-B Tech Foundation Chair Joe Brumit, was featured in the April issue of NC Magazine, as one of the state's Exceptional Women Leaders.

Instructors Attend Career Day

Three A-B Tech instructors attended career day at Ira B. Jones Elementary School. Michelle Kelley, Culinary Lab Manager; Tambra Luppino, Spa Therapies and Operations instructor; and Tim Reischman, Theraputic Massage instructor, made presentations to students on their respective programs.

Goodstadt-Evans Attends World View Seminar

Randee Goodstadt-Evans, Social/Behavioral Sciences chair, attended World View's "Understanding Contemporary Africa" seminar March 26-27 at UNC Chapel Hill. The program, co-sponsored by the African Studies Center at UNC, featured presentations by experts on African culture, history, religion and politics.

McCarthy Goes Extra Mile

Jack McCarthy, adjunct Business instructor, was praised by Cindy Little, Middle College assistant principal, for his assistance in helping a student graduate. Student Amy Herron was in McCarthy's BUS 110 class to complete her requirements for graduation. When her baby was delivered early, she missed nearly a month of school. She contacted McCarthy, who agreed to tutor Herron while he was waiting for rotator cuff surgery. "Mr. McCarthy had his wife drive him here to A-B Tech with his arm in a sling to tutor Amy. He did all of this on his own time and without pay," Little wrote. "Jack McCarthy is one of those teachers who went above and beyond to help a student achieve her dream."

Radiography Reaccredited For Eight Years

A-B Tech's Radiography Department has been reaccredited for eight years, the maximum number of years that can be granted, by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Radiography has been taught at the College since 1971. Congratulations to Debra Reese, Medical Imaging chair; Brenda Phillips, Medical Imaging instructor; and Angela Goodwin, Radiography instructor.

Small Business Center Client Featured in WNC Woman

Avi Sommerville and her business, the World's Best Carrot Cake, were in the April edition of Western North Carolina Woman. As a Small Business Center client, Sommerville encouraged readers to go to the center if considering starting a business. "It is an unbelievable service and it is completely free; Russ (Yelton, Executive Director, Entrepreneurial Ventures and Business Incubation) guided us in every way imaginable, from how to start the right way from the beginning. He also arranged for us to have time with accountants and lawyers."

Trammel Showcases Paintings Through Exhibition

Sharon Trammel, Fine Arts instructor, is having an exhibition of paintings titled "Paris of the South," celebrating Asheville's unique cultural diversity. The exhibition is being held in the newly renovated gallery lobby of the Asheville Community Theatre, 85 E. Walnut St., downtown Asheville, from May 1 - June 15, with an artist's reception the evening of May 8.

Yelton Presents At Global Conference

Russ Yelton, Executive Director of Entrepreneurial Ventures and Business Incubation at A-B Tech, discussed connecting business and education on a global scale at the Global American South Conference April 13-14 at UNC Chapel Hill.

Beyond the Sunbelt: Southern Economic Development in a Global Context is the University's annual interdisciplinary conference on the globalization of the southern United States. The goal of the conference is to examine how global forces are shaping regional economic development strategies and to consider the best paths forward.

Atil Reads At Literary Festival In Washington

Yesho Atil, English instructor, read at the annual Get Lit! literary festival in Spokane, Wash. April 16-20. The event is hosted by Eastern Washington State University, which is also republishing Atil's novel, On Freedom Street, a coming of age story which takes place in Turkey. While in Spokane, Atil visited local community colleges to take part in a panel discussion of Islamic Women from several Muslim countries. Her presentation focused on the social and political implications of the purdah, the covering Muslim women often choose to wear.
