The N.C. Community College System is inviting community college artists to participate in the annual Community College Art Exhibit, now named in honor of President Emeritus H. Martin Lancaster.
Submissions are welcome from full-time and part-time faculty, students, alumni and staff of North Carolina's community colleges. This includes submissions from curriculum and continuing education areas, from the full range of fine arts and crafts, and from related fields such as advertising, graphic design, computer design, photography and film.
Lancaster created the exhibit in his first year on the job as a means of showcasing the talents of the community college family, as well as creating an engaging and stimulating office environment. President Scott Ralls has asked that Lancaster continue to make the selections and supervise the placement of the artwork in the Caswell Building at the System Office in Raleigh. The selected works stay on display through 2009.
All media suitable for use in a public office building are welcomed, including but not limited to painting, drawing, graphic design, computer design and animation, photography, pottery, stained glass, weaving, woodcarving, metalwork, sculpture, film and video and outdoor installations.
Artwork is displayed in the public spaces on all six floors of the Caswell Building, and the spaces are well suited to large-scale works. There are particular needs for large pieces in the fifth-floor assembly space, stained glass pieces for the main lobby, as well as large quilts, weavings and other fabric pieces.
Due to the increasing difficulty of receiving attachments by e-mail, the preferred method of submission is digital images on CD, preferably in a jpeg. NCCCS will also accept website galleries, slides and photographs. Each submission must be labeled with the name of the artist; the name of the community college; the name of the artwork (if untitled, then include a visual description); the medium; and the dimensions. Make sure digital images are named in such as way as to distinguish them from hundreds of others. Slides and photos should be labeled on slide holders or photo backs, if possible.
Artists should submit images of their artworks (not the actual works) to either Phyllis Boone in Holly Library or to the attention of Barbara Currier, NC Community College System, 5001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-5001 by Dec. 5.
