Young Speaks at Craggy Correctional Center Graduation Ceremony

Craggy Correctional Institute graduation

Dr. Betty Young, President, addresses inmates of Craggy Correctional Institute during the 2008 graduation ceremony Oct. 9. Thirty-five men received diplomas and certificates.

A-B Tech President Dr. Betty Young was the keynote speaker at the 2008 graduation ceremony Oct. 9 at Craggy Correctional Center, where 35 men received diplomas and certificates in Facility Maintenance, Microcomputer Applications, Food Service Technology and General Education Development (GED).

"The actor Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, once said: 'So many of our dreams at first seem impossible ... then they seem improbable ... and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable,'" Young said.

"Being here today is proof you've got what it takes. You've got the desire and the dedication to make your dream inevitable. This ceremony today proves to me that each and every one of you found hope. Each and every one of you found opportunity," Young said. "And I understand some of you even found jobs."

Cliff Johnson, Craggy Correctional Center Superintendent, said the ceremony was a milestone. "You can use what you have done to help the children in your life. Take these skills and use them to the benefit of yourself and your family."

Young said a partnership between A-B Tech and Craggy made the educational opportunities available to the inmates, citing the efforts of Superintendent Johnson, Richard Elingburg, Bruce Cravener and Steven Bolden from the Correctional Center and from A-B Tech, Shelley White, who supervises the Facility Maintenance program; Caroline Brigmon, who supervises Computer Training; Barbara Brownsmith and Kay Manley from Basic Skills; and Sheila Tillman and Bronwen McCormick from Culinary Arts and Hospitality.

Instructors teaching the recent graduates were Charles "Doc" Shanor and George Woodruff in Computer Training; Steven Wright in Facility Maintenance; Karen Pauly and Andy Weatherly in GED; and Greg Spencer in Food Service Technology. Pauly was recognized as the Instructor of the Year for the facility.
