Girl Scout Troop 027 have taken on beautifying the Enka Site as their Silver Award project. The troop and their leader, Sarah Schober, BioNetwork Technical Specialist, were awarded a Foundation Mini Grant for the planting project.
Sarah Schober, BioNetwork Technical Specialist, and her Girl Scout Troop 027 have been landscaping the Enka Site after receiving a mini grant of $2,000 from the A-B Tech Foundation.
During the process of turning a manufacturing plant into a college, one element was overlooked - landscaping, according to Schober and her troop. "The A-B Tech Enka campus would greatly benefit from beautifying the grounds," she said. "Currently there are some scattered trees and bushes, but A-B Tech would gain so much if more trees, bulbs and perennials were planted."
The project also benefited the troop, as members volunteered to partner with Schober in both the writing the grant proposal and completing goals and objectives. The girls are using the project as the main focus of their Silver Award, an award Girl Scouts can earn for helping their community.
"Many of the plants will be native to our area. Additionally, we plan to focus on herbal species as we choose our perennials in order to find commonalities with many of our incubator tenants who are involved in the herbal natural product industries of Western North Carolina," Schober said.
Schober said she spoke with the Enka Plant Operations staff to take steps necessary to ensure that the upkeep of the grounds will be no more difficult than it presently is. The project started in July and will wrap up in June. The troop plans to have an Earth Day event in April.
Schober served as project director and her assistant troop leader Susan Terry, an A-B Tech graduate, was the assistant director. Girl Scouts working on the grounds were Erin West, who attends Asheville High School; Emily West, who attends Asheville Middle School; and Elle Schober and Emmalie Handley of Enka High School.
"The long-term goals will be seen in our investment in the beauty of our campus and the growth of these girls into women as they achieve their goal of earning their Silver Award and move on to their Gold Award," Schober said.
