Funding for A-B Tech Foundation Scholarships comes from a variety of sources. Eighteen students are featured this month representing nine scholarships awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.
Cayley Davis
Cayley Davis received the AvL Technologies Endowed Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program and plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to take the Dental Assisting National Boards to become a certified dental assistant, then finish the Dental Hygiene program and become a registered dental hygienist," she wrote. Cayley likes to read and spend time with her family and pets.
Steven Goff
Steven Goff received the Asheville Independent Restaurant "Chefs of Tomorrow" Scholarship. He is currently enrolled in the Culinary Technology program at A-B Tech and plans to graduate in 2009. "I would like to work a season at Eseeola Lodge before going to work in New Orleans to gain skill and experience before coming back to North Carolina." Steven enjoys cooking and music, but mostly anything food related.
Zachary Robinson
Zachary Robinson received the ArvinMeritor Scholarship. He is currently enrolled in the Electronics Engineering Technology program and plans to graduate in 2010. "After getting my two-year degree, I plan to get a job with U.S. Cellular as an engineer." Zachary loves to ride dirt bikes and motorcycles. He also enjoys lifting weights and takes karate three days a week.
John Urquhart
John Urquhart received an anonymous A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. John is currently enrolled in the Associate in Arts degree program and plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to gain my doctorate in psychology and open my own practice." John enjoys sports, the outdoors, mechanics and electronics.
Matthew Mugrage
Matthew Mugrage received an anonymous A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. He is currently enrolled in the Associate in Arts degree program and plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan on transferring to Chapel Hill where I will study biology." Matthew enjoys hiking, biking and reading.
Mark Elledge
Mark Elledge received an anonymous A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. He is currently enrolled in the Associate in Science degree program and plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to become an Arctic engineer and transfer to Fairbanks, Alaska." Mark enjoys hiking, running, weight lifting, biking and wrestling.
Michelle Marcoux
Michelle Marcoux received the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. She is currently enrolled in the Business Administration program and plans to graduate in 2009. "I have started my own business thanks to the Lavender Fund and the Student Business Incubator." Michelle enjoys spending time with her son, and giving platelets every two weeks at the Red Cross. She also enjoys fishing, boating, barbecues and picnics.
Carolyn Macias
Carolyn Macias received the Adelaide Key Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Medical Sonography program and plans to graduate in 2009. "I hope to work at Rutherford County Hospital for the first five years. Afterwards I would like to travel as a tech and maybe even teach." Carolyn loves to camp with her family and read.
Karon Warlick
Karon Warlick received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Cosmetology program and plans to graduate in 2009. "After graduation I plan to work close to home to raise my child, save money and open a spa. I will use my knowledge and skills to become a successful business owner." Karon enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, cross-stitch and crafts.
Kathryn Valliere
Kathryn Valliere received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program and plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to continue my education in hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner. I plan to work during this time in community nursing, possibly in home health." Kathryn loves to garden and do home improvement projects. She also enjoys spending time with friends and extended family.
Lisa Paquette
Lisa Paquette received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Veterinary Medical Technology program and plans to graduate in 2009. "I plan to finish my client education book and get it published, and to earn my bachelor's degree in vet technology, perhaps at Michigan State University." Lisa enjoys photography, travel and client education.
Marcella Mulhollem
Marcella Mulhollem received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Digital Media Technology program and plans to graduate in 2009. "I plan to move on to a four year college and earn my degree in business or in design. Either way, upon graduating I will begin my own business here in Asheville." Marcella enjoys theology, photography, history, hiking, drawing, reading, movies, film production and writing.
Sheri Kiser
Sheri Kiser received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program and plans to graduate in 2010. "Currently I am focusing solely on the ADN program. After graduation I plan to go to work and continue working on my bachelor's degree." Sheri loves all sports. She plays in a local women's soccer league. She likes to watch movies, play poker and learn new things.
Erika Jones
Erika Jones received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program and plans to graduate in 2010. "I would like to become a dental hygienist and I plan to work in the Asheville area." Erika loves to read and play with her niece and nephew. She also enjoys going to the lake with her friends.
Jessica Heinerth
Jessica Heinerth received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the General Occupation Technology program and plans to graduate in 2011. "I am in pursuit of a nursing degree. I plan took work in a hospital in labor and delivery or as a lactation consultant." Jessica enjoys living in the mountains and hiking on weekends. She also loves live music and tries to see a show as often as she can.
Shannie Hagen
Shannie Hagen received the A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship. She is enrolled in the General Occupational Technology program and plans to graduate in 2009. "My career plan is to graduate with my Medical Office Administration diploma." Shannie likes to spend as much time as she can with her three children. They like to play outside, cook, read at the library and visit family.
Khyrstyne Williams
Khyrstyne Williams received the A-B Tech AEOP Ray Bailey Endowed Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Associate in Science Degree program and plans to graduate in 2010. Khyrstyne plans to become a forensic pathologist.
Jayne Lombardo received the Altrusa International of Asheville Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Radiography program and plans to graduate in 2009. "I plan to work in a hospital or medical center radiography department." Jayne's interests are her two daughters, and being a positive role model for them. She enjoys reading, swimming, and raising awareness for abused children to mandate federal change that unifies state laws.
