Funding for A-B Tech Foundation scholarships comes from a variety of sources. Nineteen students are featured this month representing eight different scholarships awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.
Betty Coffelt
Betty Coffelt is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program. "I plan to complete a four-year degree with a major in marketing and a minor in photography so I can promote sustainable living in the lives of consumers," she said. Betty enjoys rafting, photography, running, school and music.
Rebecca Cortes
Rebecca Cortes is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I will be able to work as an RN at the Veteran's Administration Hospital where I am currently employed," she said. Rebecca enjoys walking and running outdoors, and playing with her dog.
Mary Faulkner
Mary Faulkner is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I would like to be a registered nurse in the operating room and to use the knowledge and education I received to better the community," she said. Mary's interests are animals, reading, sports of all types and hanging out with her friends.
Kimberly Finney
Kimberly Finney is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Dental Assisting program. "I plan to work as a dental assistant once I graduate and possibly work toward the dental hygiene program," she said. Kimberly enjoys swimming, being outdoors and playing with her dogs.
Melissa Grimes-Weedle
Melissa Grimes-Weedle is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Medical Transcription program. "I plan to graduate with a great grade point average and get a great job at Mission Hospital or another hospital or doctor's office," she said. Melissa's hobbies include reading, traveling and taking care of her dog.
Kenneth Payne
Kenneth Payne is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Web Technologies program. "I plan to gain full-time employment as a web programmer until I can get established as a freelance web programmer," he said. Kenneth teaches the youth at his church.
John Rice
John Rice is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Computer Engineering Technology program. "I have career plans to own my personal business in computers for upgrades and repairs," he said. John's interests are computers, and his hobbies are biking through the woods of the mountains.
Robin Ryder
Robin Ryder is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program. "I would like to go to graduate school, then become a teacher," he said. Robin enjoys writing music and reading.
Julie Thomas
Julie Thomas is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I would like to earn my master's degree in midwifery and work in labor and delivery at a local hospital," she said. Julie enjoys hiking, biking, yoga, knitting, plants and playing with her dog.
Melody White
Melody White is a recipient of The N.C. State Trust Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program. "I am working on core classes in order to apply to a BSN program. My long-term goal is to be a midwife," she said. Melody loves to learn and to read.
Roxanna Trejo
Roxanna Trejo is a recipient of The North Buncombe Extension Community Association Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I currently work as an LPN. After graduation I plan on working as an RN. I would also like to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing in the future," she said. Roxanna loves the outdoors and enjoys biking, hiking, swimming and gardening.
Sampson Conway
Sampson Conway is a recipient of The Osborne M. Hart Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Human Services Technology/Social Services program. "I would like to pursue work with populations who may be homeless with substance abuse, HIV/AIDs, and their related problems," he said. Sampson likes listening to jazz and gospel music, and he plays guitar. He is active in his church, which serves the homeless population.
Sonya Richardson
Sonya Richardson is a recipient of The Osborne M. Hart Endowed Scholarship and is currently enrolled in the Criminal Justice Technology program. "I plan to work in law enforcement in Atlanta," she said. Sonya is a singer/songwriter and enjoys reading.
Benjamin West
Benjamin West is the recipient of The Patrick A. Brannen Construction Scholarship and is enrolled in the Construction Management Technology program. "I would like to continue what I am doing right now," he said. Benjamin enjoys the outdoors, off-roading, welding and fabrication.
Zachariah Conley
Zachariah Conley is the recipient of The Progress Energy Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Science Degree program. "I would like to pursue a career in agriculture engineering or natural resources management," he said. Zach loves to play soccer, mixed martial arts and most other sports. He plays guitar and mandolin for fun and sometimes for his church.
Valerie Meehan
Valerie Meehan is the recipient of The Robert F. Burgin Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Veterinary Medical Technology program. "After I graduate I plan on working as a veterinary technician while volunteering with wildlife. Eventually, I plan on getting my DVM and becoming a wildlife veterinarian," she said. Valerie likes to walk her dog, study herbology and read animal-related books.
Erin Honeycutt
Erin Honeycutt is a recipient of The Ruth Denham Memorial Scholarship and is enrolled in the Dental Assisting program. "I'd like to begin working immediately after graduation and possibly return to A-B Tech for Dental Hygiene in a few years," she said. Erin's interests include her two children, local festivals, weaving and sewing.
Cynthia Sexton
Cynthia Sexton is a recipient of The Ruth Denham Memorial Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I want to obtain my RN license, then work on my BSN degree," she said. Cynthia enjoys spending time with family and friends during cookouts, and spending time with the elderly and listening to their stories.
Sarah Wilkison
Sarah Wilkison is a recipient of The S.O.M. Scholarship and is enrolled in the Baking and Pastry program. "After graduation I plan to move on to work under master bakers and pastry chefs to further my knowledge of baking," she said. Sarah enjoys baking, writing, playing bass, fishing, being outdoors and cake decorating.
