Alternate Placement Assessments


Scores from an alternate assessment must meet the minimum college score requirements listed below and be less than ten (10) years old. Alternate assessments include the NC DAP, SAT, ACT, Accuplacer, ASSET, and COMPASS. Students with scores below the minimum requirements listed below must satisfy college-level English and math placement using one of the other placement options listed on our A-B Tech Placement Options page.

Minimum Score Required (may use a combination of assessments or testing dates less than 10 years old)

NC-DAP

  • DMA 010 – 030 (score of 7+ in each module): No coreq required for MAT-110; coreq required for MAT-143, 152, 121, and 171
  • DMA 010 – 050 (score of 7+ in each module): No coreq required for MAT-110, 143, or 152; coreq required for MAT-121 and 171
  • DMA 010 – 080 (score of 7+ in each module): No MAT coreq required
  • DRE 096 (score of <116): No English placement
  • DRE 097 (score of 117 – 150): Coreq required for ENG 111
  • DRE 098 (score of 151+): No ENG coreq required

SAT (Prior to Mar. 2016)

  • Reading = 500+
  • Writing = 500+
  • Math = 500+

SAT (Mar. 2016 and Later)

  • EBR = 480+
  • Math = 530+

ACT (Prior to Dec. 2011)

  • Reading (score of 22+): No ENG coreq required
  • English (score of 22+): No ENG coreq required

ACT (Prior to Feb. 2014)

  • Math (score of 22+): No MAT coreq required

ACT (Jan. 2012–Feb. 2014)

  • Reading (score of 21+): No ENG coreq required
  • English (score of 18+): No ENG coreq required

ACT (Mar. 2014–Present)

  • Reading (score of 20-21): Coreq required for ENG-111
  • Reading (score of 22+): No ENG coreq required
  • English (16-17): Coreq required for ENG-111
  • English (score of 18+): No ENG coreq required
  • Math (score of 20-21): coreq required for MAT-110, 143, 152, 121, and 171
  • Math (score of 22+): No MAT coreq required

ACCUPLACER

  • Reading = 80
  • Sentence Skills = 86
  • Arithmetic = 55
  • Elementary Algebra = 55 or 75 (depending on math course)

ASSET

  • Reading = 41
  • Writing = 41
  • Numerical Skills = 41
  • Elementary Algebra = 41
  • Intermediate Algebra = 41

COMPASS

  • Reading = 81
  • Writing = 70
  • Pre-algebra = 47
  • Algebra = 46 or 66 (depending on math course)
