A-B Tech Online - Is online learning right for me?

Why do people choose to take online courses?

Online courses are especially attractive if:

  • You prefer to work independently.
  • Your schedule or other commitments prevent you from attending classes regularly.
  • You are located at a distance from the College.

What makes a good online student?

Online courses work very well for people who are self-directed, organized, and self-disciplined. If you are not very well organized or self-disciplined, or if you prefer to receive a lot of support, then a classroom or hybrid course may be better for you. If you learn best through direct interaction with an instructor and other students, through talking and listening rather than working alone, then consider a classroom or hybrid course. It's no fun to invest time and money in an online course and then discover that it's not for you, so ask yourself honestly:

  • Am I able to work independently and without the constant guidance of a teacher or classmate?
  • Am I motivated enough to keep working without the structure of a classroom?
  • Can I manage my time and stay on task to completion?
  • Do I complete projects on time without reminders or pressure to do so?
  • Do I have the self-discipline to stay on task and balance my coursework with other responsibilities?
  • Do I have a quiet place to work at home, in a library, or at some other location?
  • Do I have access to the hardware, software and technical skills that I need?

How do online courses compare to traditional courses?

Online courses are designed with the same learning requirements and standards as traditional courses. The difference lies in the way that you learn. As an online student you will:

  • Communicate with your instructor and other students using email and Web-based tools such as Discussion Boards.
  • Login to your course account at least twice a week to access your course documents and learning materials, take online quizzes and exams, submit assignments, and check your grades.
  • Use a computer, Web browser, and application software to connect to your course, conduct research, and complete tests and assignments.
  • Manage your own time and ensure that you stay on track and meet deadlines.

What computer hardware and software will I need?

As an online student you will need access to a computer that is connected to the Web, and that contains some basic software. Your computer and software must meet minimal hardware and software requirements.
