Business Administration Program Technical Standards


Purpose Statement

All students in the Business Administration program are expected to meet certain technical standards which are essential for the successful completion of all phases of the program, and which reflect industry requirements and standards. To verify the student’s ability to perform these essential functions, students may be required to demonstrate the technical standards below.

Meeting these technical standards does not guarantee employment in this field upon graduation. The ability to meet the program’s technical standards does not guarantee a student’s eligibility for any certification exams or successful completion of the program.

 

Technical Standard Definition of Standards Examples
Critical Thinking/Problem-Solving Skills Utilize critical thinking skills to adequately make informed decisions that demonstrate good judgment. Independently solve routine business problems to develop a sound business strategy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic principles and practices of contemporary business.
  • Examine a company’s industry and competitive environment.
  • Develop a full marketing analysis of an industry.
  • Examine the functions of personnel/human resource management within an organization.
  • Summarize the use of ethical standards and norms as they relate to organizational culture.
  • Develop a management plan for a business including organization, control, direction, and communication.
  • Analyze current financial statements and identify financial needs for achieving organizational goals.
  • Identify legal and ethical issues relating to the industry.
Interpersonal Skills Work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse population in a variety of settings and situations.
  • Show respect for those whose appearance, condition, beliefs, and values may conflict with your own.
  • Demonstrate sufficient emotional health to perform under stress and exercise good judgment to complete all assignments.
  • Teamwork is frequently required in today’s business environment.
  • Work diligently and devote the necessary time to complete tasks.

Communication Skills Communicate effectively and professionally when interacting with peers, faculty, staff, and guests both verbally and in written form.

  • Speak and write clearly and distinctly for seated classroom and/or online assignments, projects, and exams.
  • Write clear, concise, professional emails.

Mobility/Motor Skills Move freely and safely in a classroom environment, sit in a classroom for the duration of the class, and operate a computer keyboard and mobile communication technologies.
  • Move safely within a classroom environment when presenting reports or information to the class.
  • Ability to sit at a desk for up to 3 hours with breaks.
  • Typing skills are necessary to participate in classroom activities such as homework assignments, exams, or quizzes.
  • Navigate a computer browser to find information on the World Wide Web.
Auditory Skills Comprehension and understanding of spoken language. Detect equipment alarms.
  • Ability to discern directions in the classroom.
  • Ability to articulate thoughts and information to others.
  • Must be able to participate in occasional web-based meetings.
Visual Skills Ability to work on a computer for up to 3 hours with breaks. Ability to read printed and written instructions.
  • Ability to use computers to conduct simulated business transactions.
  • Ability to read and interpret business documents and forms necessary for simulated business transactions.
Tactile Skills Use computer equipment; operate and utilize office equipment on a daily basis.
  • Perform duties on a computer-related to all simulated business functions.
  • Ability to utilize various software programs required in the business field.
Environmental Work effectively in an active environment, tolerate environmental stressors, and function safely. Adapt to changing environments.
  • Ability to prioritize requests and meet demands of a simulated business environment.
  • Ability to multitask using different operating systems aligned with business functions.
  • Perform duties in areas that may be close, crowded, and/or noisy.
  • Adapt to changes in class or work environment such as virtual or alternative schedules.
Emotional/Behavioral
