January 14, 2020 Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes

The Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College Board of Trustees convened a meeting on Tuesday, January 14, at 8:30 a.m. in the Private Dining Room of the Brumit Center for Culinary Arts and Hospitality. Dr. Roger Metcalf, Vice Chair, presided.

The following members of the Board were present: Theresa Banks, Frances Ramsey, Matt Kern, Keynon Lake, Leah Ashburn, and Ron Edgerton. Trustee Joe Brumit participated by phone.

Others present for the meeting included: Dr. Dirk Wilmoth, Vice President of Business and Finance/CFO; Chris Campbell, College Attorney; and Carolyn Rice, Secretary to the Board.

Motion For Closed Session

Dr. Metcalf asked for a motion to go into a Closed Session.

Dr. Theresa Banks moved that the Board of Trustees of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College go into closed session pursuant to G.S. 143-318.11(a)(2) to discuss a special recognition for an employee. Ms. Ashburn seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved.

Dr. Metcalf recognized Mr. Campbell to address the Board. Mr. Campbell stated that the Board has a quorum with the addition of Mr. Brumit over the telephone. He opined that any honor bestowed on Dr. King should be ratified at the February meeting given that the College Constitution calls for a minimum of eight (8) Trustees in actual attendance to take action. The Trustees were comfortably proceeding under the circumstances.

Resolution/Action Item

2. A. Dr. Metcalf read a Resolution of Appreciation for Dr. Dennis King to the Board.

Dr. Wilmoth provided an overview of the Commons area to the Board. The Commons area is a large green space located between the parking deck, the Elm and Sycamore buildings, and the Mission Health/A-B Tech Conference Center. The area is currently underutilized and Dr. King has been working on making the area more attractive for the College and the community to use.

The College has funds available to plant trees and bushes and to purchase benches for the area to make the green space more attractive and user-friendly.

On a motion by Mr. Kern, seconded by Dr. Banks, the Resolution of Appreciation for Dr. Dennis King to honor Dr. King for his lifetime of service in higher education, his 28 years of service to A-B Tech, and his six years as President of A-B Tech by naming him President Emeritus of A-B Tech and by naming the new greenspace between the Elm, Sycamore, Coman and Conference Center buildings the Dennis King Commons, was approved by unanimous consent.

On a motion properly made, the Board returned to open session at 8:44 a.m.
