Clinical Massage Hosting Open House

Join us on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for a tour of our new Massage clinic and lab. We are located on the 1st floor of the Ferguson Center for Allied Health and Workforce Development on the A-B Tech Asheville Campus in Room 114. With a total of 520 hours of instruction, A-B Tech's cost-effective Clinical Massage Program is a unique opportunity for those aspiring to enter a healthcare career. The program currently has a 100% pass rate for completers taking their state licensure testing.

Graduate Erik Hermanns, shared the following about A-B Tech's program.

I began my journey into the health profession ten years ago in October 2012 when I first became licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN). I have worked in various nursing specialties including medical-surgical, cardiac telemetry, and ICU. Throughout my time, and to this day, I feel that although the work I do as a nurse is rewarding and important in an utmost way, there remains something out of balance in the work I do at the hospital. I can bust my behind for a whole 12-hour shift and leave still feeling unfulfilled. I have always felt that there is something more out there for me, and I have found it in massage.

I have always been interested in learning massage therapy because in the shift of a floor nurse there is little time for a comforting personal touch. We learned in school about nightly massages for the patients to aid in sleep after their baths, but by the time I entered the field those days seemed to be long gone. I started my career working the night shift, and there was barely time for the bath itself, let alone a massage afterward.

I found myself in a cycle of feeling burnt out with nursing when I received the A-B Tech brochure. I saw how affordable the program was and I knew I needed to make the time to further my education. After meeting with Teresa and Jim (both nurses themselves), I knew I could make it work. I have spoken with many other currently licensed therapists who all feel that the education I received at A-B Tech was just as valuable (if not more so) than their massage programs which cost ten times as much! I truly learned something every day, whether it was about the way I interact with clients/patients, the anatomy that I had long forgotten from nursing school ten years prior, or something I didn’t know about myself as a person.

While in school at A-B Tech, I also studied for and became certified as both a Certified Rehabilitation RN (CRRN) and a Holistic Nurse (HNB-BC). I feel that the renewal of my interest in learning and furthering my knowledge base led me to strive for these endeavors. I am back to working as an RN and working at Hand & Stone spa on Tunnel Rd. a few days per week- a newfound Yin to add to my previous Yang. I am still unsure of which direction I would like to take in my career as a health professional, but I know that without question my licensure as a massage therapist (LMBT) will play a role in how I treat my patients and my clients, and I am grateful to A-B Tech for helping me get here
