Construction Students Work to Improve A-B Trek

Students in Heath Moody’s Construction I class worked on the A-B Trek trail kiosk and food planter. The trail itself is a collaboration across many different curricula and with several different employees on campus. The trail is used in several different classes and departments such as Biology, photography, fitness, yoga, surveying, GIS/mapping, construction, and sustainability. The kiosk is a way to make more people aware of the trail and to demonstrate some of the features, a trail map, and some educational information about things such as native vs. invasive species of plants.

According to Moody, Department Chair for Construction Management, Building Science, and Sustainability Technologies the Grounds and Maintenance employees have even been involved by recycling a piece of playground equipment for a bridge over part of the trail

“A-B Tech police folks hike it as well. I was really surprised at how much it’s already used. We’d like to put an outdoor class space, benches, and other infrastructure which makes the trail more invitational and provides hands-on projects for many of our students. I just found out that the forest behind the Chestnut building has a rare large patch of Beech trees. There’s a creek for water samples and lots of wildlife so whether part of a class or an afternoon nature get-a-way, the trail has something for everybody. Charmaine has done a great job of spearheading this whole effort,” Moody said.

Charmaine Colosimo, an Administrative Assistant in Professional Development, serves as chair of the Staff Association Wellness Committee. “There are staff and faculty on the committee, sharing ideas and knowledge from their field of interest, all with the goal of preserving the wooded trail and growing the trail across campus,” she said.
