Please congratulate the latest winners of the Invitational Education Award. From left, are Mike Shelton, Joseph “J” Brown and Shelly Blackburn, with members of the Invitational Education committee, co-chaired by Nancy Kool and Josh Davis. Excerpts from their nominations are below.
Mike Shelton
I would like to recommend Mike Shelton who works in the café. He is extremely caring and helps connect students to services on campus, sponsored a child for the Children’s Holiday Party, and always has a kind word and smile for each person he meets. Just today he connected a student to me who needs support from the College food pantry. He maintains this positive outlook no matter what is happening. Mike is a shining example of an Invitational Human!
Joseph Brown
Joseph “J” Brown works with the most at-risk student population on campus in his role in the Advising Center in Transitional Studies. He provides a calm presence for those who fear beginning something new as well as providing a support network for those who may have challenges in their lives. He approaches his duties with a smile and a very positive attitude while treating individuals with dignity and respect. Everyone who comes into contact with “J” feels welcome, and he creates a safe space for all those in our community seeking a better life through the vast offerings in Transitional Studies.
Our students have no better advocate than “J” and he embodies the very best of Invitational Education.
Shelly Blackburn
Shelly exhibits invitational behavior to all who encounter her on a daily basis. Moreover, she goes above and beyond normal expectations. For example, on the first day of class for each ACA 115 course, (no matter how late the class is meeting) she will great the instructor about 5-10 minutes before class begins to see if the instructor needs anything and if the technology is working properly. She is always willing to assist others and consistently makes a difference with both her students and colleagues. Further, she encourages collaboration of best teaching practices among her instructors.
