A-B Tech’s Medical Coding program is now offered 100 percent online or in a hybrid method of delivery. This short-term class lasts three semesters and prepares individuals for entry-level employment opportunities in the healthcare specialty of medical coding.
Medical coding is a specialized skill that involves converting patient medical records into codes for billing purposes.
“Doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers use codes to bill insurance companies for diagnoses, services, and procedures rendered,” said program Chair Misty Shuler. “Successful coders need to be detail-oriented and have good computer skills.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for medical coders will grow at a rate of 22 percent through the year 2022. The median salary for medical coders is $35,000, with highly-experienced workers earning up to $54,500. The certificate can be earned in just under a year and can be used in different states. Medical Coders work in hospitals, doctor’s offices, and surgery center and, with experience, there are opportunities to work from home.
