Pharmacy Technology Program Adds Compounding Certification

A-B Tech’s Pharmacy Technology program has been recognized as a Sterile Compounding Education/Training program by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. A-B Tech is one of four colleges in the state with this recognition.

The recognition enables the college’s Pharmacy Technology graduates to be eligible to earn the sterile compounding certification, which is a new addition to the Pharmacy Technician career ladder.

“This recognition by the PTCB is great demonstration of how our students are held to a high standard in compounding IV medications and chemotherapy, which is desired by hospitals in Western North Carolina,” said Zachary Jordan, Chair of Pharmacy Technology at A-B Tech. “Technicians will have to complete a PTCB-recognized program in order to become certified by 2020.”

The Pharmacy Technology Program prepares individuals to assist the pharmacist in duties that a technician can legally perform. Employment opportunities include retail, hospitals, nursing homes, research laboratories, wholesale drug companies, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.  Graduates from the program may be eligible to take the National Certification Examination to become a certified pharmacy technician.
