This certification-related Fire and Life Safety Education (FLSE) course covers the basics of fire and life safety and is the first of three FLSE levels. Students will be introduced to injuries that occur in North Carolina and programs that are designed to prevent these injuries. Students will also discuss the mission of their organizations and the responsibility of prevention education, to include using correct/current fire & life safety educational messages and the role of the Fire & Life Safety Educator. This class is designed to give firefighters and fire & life safety educators ideas and confidence to teach fire safety to all ages. Students will participate in fire safety lessons and teach a safety lesson plans that they can use at their own fire department. Students will also be introduced to new Community Risk Reduction resources they can obtain at no cost. This class is designed to show a new educator how to keep successful records and reports. Students will review and document various fire and life safety educational programs, describe various formats, prepare written reports, and discuss time management and organizational skills. Information will be presented on how to develop and maintain a work schedule, arrange meetings, presentations, and community events, while reducing scheduling conflicts. Working with local media outlets and distributing fire & life safety materials and messages to the community will be discussed in detail. This is a NC Fire and Rescue Commission certification course approved for offering as of July 1, 2017. This course should be offered consistent with the most current Commission guidelines. This course is designed to establish the foundation for and promote consistent training of all responders to achieve the three objectives of the Traffic Incident Management (TIM) National Unified Goal: responder safety; safety, quick clearance from incidents; and prompt, reliable, interoperable communications. This course will familiarize fire and rescue personnel with the purpose of the Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) and National TIM Responder Training Program and how it relates specifically to North Carolina. Participants will learn to recognize and identify the dangers encountered by emergency responders working in or near traffic. This course is not a state fire & rescue certification course; however, it is a requirement related to one or more state certifications and will transfer electronically to the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) for inclusion on OSFM transcripts. This course provides an introductory study of survival Spanish in the workplace for non-Spanish speaking employers, employees and job seekers who desire to enhance communication skills. Students will learn to identify, minimize or eliminate barriers to communication and understanding between native Spanish speakers and non-Spanish speakers. The course utilizes a variety of engaging methods to address basic Spanish commands, yes/no questions and simple phrases critical to the workplace.

This course offers applied Spanish for the Workplace to facilitate basic communication with people whose native language is Spanish. Emphasis is placed on oral communication and career-specific vocabulary that is focused on health, business, and/or public service professions. Upon completion, students should be able to communicate at a functional level with native speakers and demonstrate cultural sensitivity. *Classes run on Fridays only

Knowledge based competencies include health and social issues that disproportionately impact clients. Class meets virtually via Zoom, with additional online assignments and self-paced work per week. The T-STEP is a FREE intervention developed to support transition to employment and post secondary education for 16-21 year-olds with Autism Spectrum Disorder who will or have received the Future-Ready Core high school diploma. The course will work with students on goal planning and monitoring their progress. Time management skills along with the need to be flexible while approaching skills in an organized manner will be taught. Along with effectively coping with stress and dealing with corrective feedback, and being able to speak up for yourself and using professional social skills. Technology skills will be taught as to how they can be useful in these areas. This class is fee-waived for unemployed and underemployed young adults referred by TEACCH.
