Learn from one of NC's few equine hoof care specialists!

Local farrier and instructor, David King, introduces students to the basics of proper trimming and equine hoof health. Trimming and maintenance of the equine hoof are key to the well-being and longevity of animals. The class covers basic hoof anatomy, hoof mechanics, tool options/usage, theory/practice of safe trimming techniques, common hoof ailments, and two days of live animal practice.

Classes are held at A-B Tech Madison and live practice is at Heart of Horse Sense.

Friday, 7/12 - 9/27, 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Fees: Course $332

Pre-Requisite: Blacksmithing, (SEF 7534)

For those comfortable with blacksmithing processes, this course will focus on hands-on skills to design and create hand-forged blades or knives. Using both coal and gas forges, students will learn which metal will work best or their blade function and then design and produce that blade. Through processes such as shaping and heat treating, and by the end of the course students will temper the blade to a finished product. Handlemaking will be discussed but not covered in the course. Students should bring protective eyewear and gloves to the first class meeting.

Thursday, 6/13 - 6/27, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

For centuries our ancestors used natural remedies to relieve pain and improve physical and mental states through the use of herbal seeds, bark, roots, flowers, and foliage. Directly involve yourself in the healing process by making your own herbal remedies. Explore choosing herbs, making salves, poultices, and infusions, and stocking your herbal medicine cabinet.

Three Offerings: Friday, 5/17; Friday, 6/28; Friday, 8/16 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The course covers the material and the required exam for becoming a notary. Upon class completion with a passing exam grade of 80%, a person is eligible to make an application with the NC Secretary of State office. To apply for commissioning as a notary, you must: be 18 years of age or older and a legal resident of the US; be able to speak, read, and write English; have a high school diploma or equivalent; and reside or have a regular place of work or business in NC. Students must present a current photo ID and have a copy of the required textbook to be admitted to class.

Textbook: NC Notary Public Manual, 2016 Edition. Books are available to purchase at A-B Tech Madison or in the bookstore on the A-B Tech Asheville Main Campus.

Tentative Schedule for Summer Class Session Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, Fall class dates TBD, 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (plus additional days).

Registration will open 90 days before the first class meeting date To get on the list of interested students, please call (828) 398-7700. Students on the interest list are not automatically registered for the class but are notified when registration opens and given the first opportunity to register. Once everyone on the interest list is notified, registration is open on a first-registered basis until all 10 seats are filled.

Requirements:
  • Tuberculin (TB) Test - negative results of TB skin tests within the last 12 months - or - TB symptom screening questionnaire - or - negative results of 1 serum blood test (Quqantiferon, T.Spot (IGRA) within the last 12 months) - or - negative chest x-ray with the past 5 years for students who have a history of positive skin tests with written evaluation by a healthcare provider for signs and symptoms within the last 12 months if the x-ray is over 1 year old.
  • COVID Vaccine - 1 updated Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or fill out a Medical or Religious exemption request form.
  • A non-expired government-issued picture ID, such as a driver's license or a US passport
  • A social security card must be presented at registration. Make sure your name on your social security card and picture ID match.
  • High school diploma/GED or transcripts stating you have graduated from high school. A completed bachelor's or master's degree will also be acceptable. if unable to provide any of these documents, a free reading test will be required.
  • Payment of tuition is due at the time of registration. (subject to change by the state)
  • The cost of the textbook, workbook, and handout is approximately $95. Students must purchase the Nursing Assistance I textbook and read the first four chapters before the first class meeting. Textbook material is covered quickly.
  • A 4100 fee for the NC competency examination is required to be placed on the NC Nurse Aid Registry. This fee is due upon completion of the class.

Sat-Sun, April 27 - May 19, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Fees: Course $400

The class focuses on the fundamentals and skills needed to become a whitewater rafting guide. Learn to read whitewater, use river signals, maneuver and rig rafts, tie knots, work with guests, and other basic river operations. Great preparation for those considering seasonal employment opportunities in the mountains. Students must be 18 years old to register and must register by calling A-B Tech Madison at (828) 398-7700 directly. Online registration is not available for this class.

Class meets at French Broad Adventures in beautiful Marshall, NC

Two Offerings: Mon, 5/13 - 8/5; Tues, 5/14 - 8/6 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Fees: Course $250

This basic welding class covers mig, tig, stick, and arc welding and is an excellent course for beginners or those simply wishing to brush up on their current welding skills. Students will be required to purchase personal protective equipment for this course (do not purchase it before the first class session). Attendance at the first class is required.
