A-B Tech School of Nursing Professional Consequences

If a student demonstrates a pattern of unprofessional behavior, unsafe behavior, or lacks the appropriate level of clinical judgment, this is cause for concern. It is important for the student to stay up to date with the nursing student handbook and college catalog information as it may be revised each semester. If a student demonstrates unprofessional or unsafe behavior, and/or has an issue with clinical judgment, the student will be counseled and the following consequences will occur.

For the first observation of unprofessional behavior or poor clinical judgment, the faculty will direct the student to develop a self-directed improvement plan (SIP). If a student demonstrates unsafe behavior, a self-improvement plan may be appropriate. However, if the unsafe behavior requires immediate intervention the first consequence may be an action plan. The student will complete the self-improvement plan assignment in the appropriate Moodle course and will be thoughtful and thorough with their self-directed plan for improvement. It is important for the student to focus on ways they can improve. Blaming and victim language is not acceptable.

If the student demonstrates a continued pattern of unprofessional or unsafe behavior and/or continues to lack clinical judgment, a faculty-directed action plan (AP) will be created. The action plan will define specific objectives that address the issue(s). If the event requires immediate intervention, an action plan will be created.

If the student continues to demonstrate a pattern of unprofessional or unsafe behavior and/or continues to lack clinical judgment, the School of Nursing program coordinator will counsel the student. During the meeting, the student’s issue(s) will be reviewed, and a timeline will be created that includes specific objectives for the student to be successful. If the pattern of behavior continues, the student will be referred to the School of Nursing director for a final warning. If the issue(s) continue, the student may earn an unsatisfactory course grade and will not be able to continue in the nursing program.
