Where would Henry David Thoreau live in the 21st century?
Our 280-square-foot sustainable home is the place. First of its kind in our country that meets the requirements to certify North Carolina Healthy Built, Energy Star, and LEED for Homes. There is so much here in a small package that we would need to write a book to boast about it. Stop by and feel the essence of creativity and quality.
This home will soon be sold publicly.
Truly Unique
Students in A-B Tech’s Construction Management and Sustainability Technologies programs have built a 280-square-foot, LEED home with the design of practicality. Every detail supports a sustainable lifestyle including the following features in the open house plan:
- Energy tax credits
- Passive Solar design
- Renewable energy
- Recycled local materials
- Expandable Structure
- Modular construction
- Small carbon footprint
- Rainwater retention roof
- All certifications provided
Student Constructed
Post and beam with advancing framing infill allow for easy modifications by the owner. The design utilizes recycled materials in a method that reinforces the openness and flexibility of the house. Throughout the house, student craftsmanship is visible in the birch cabinets, concrete countertops, tongue and groove ceiling, and 20” wide pine plank flooring.
The passive solar design is supplemented by a mini-split heating and cooling unit on days when the sun is not available. The thermal envelope of the home is high-performance to increase energy efficiency.
This home can fit on any site and because it is less than 500 square-foot, it is considered an ancillary structure allowing it to share a lot with another residence.
