About the Phlebotomy Program
With a total of 180 hours of instruction, A-B Tech's cost-effective new Phlebotomy Program prepares individuals to obtain blood and other specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis. The course, which is offered both daytime and in the evenings, is made up of online learning, classroom time, hands-on lab practice, and clinical placement. It is structured into three components: classroom lectures, labs, and clinical placement.
Graduates will qualify to take the national certification exam at the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Now under the Health Occupations Department of Continuing Education, this program is fast-paced and cost-effective for students to learn the skills required to safely and accurately draw blood samples.
Graduates may find employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, and other healthcare settings. The art of performing venipunctures on individuals across the lifespan requires proper specimen collection and handling as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills. The inability to fulfill these crucial components will result in the program not being completed.
About The Classes
Classes will be conducted in person (13 days lecture/lab, 13 days clinical). Clinical rotation schedules are 8 hours per day and vary from site to site, so flexibility is required (mostly 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a few Saturday/Sunday options).
This program provides classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences consistent with the standards of practice. Students are evaluated in all areas and must always maintain 80% during the course. Students will be expected to perform venipunctures and receive venipunctures as part of the learning experiences.
Please note: There is a mandatory two-hour orientation as part of this program prior to its start. AHA CPR class will also be included in this program and is required for the clinical component. There is a $10 charge for the AHA CPR Card.
