The Software and Web Development curriculum prepare graduates for careers in the information technology arena using computers and mobile devices to disseminate and collect information via the Internet.

Course work in this program covers the terminology and use of computers, Internet-ready devices, servers, databases, programming languages, as well as Internet applications, site development, and design. Studies will provide an opportunity for students to learn related industry standards.

Graduates should qualify for career opportunities as designers, administrators, or developers in the areas of Internet and mobile applications, websites, web services, and related areas of Internet technologies.

This course provides an orientation to the campus resources and academic skills necessary to achieve educational objectives. Emphasis is placed on an exploration of facilities and services, study skills, library skills, self-assessment, wellness, goal-setting, and critical thinking. Upon completion, students should be able to manage their learning experiences to successfully meet educational goals.

This course introduces computer programming and problem-solving in a structured program logic environment. Topics include language syntax, data types, program organization, problem-solving methods, algorithm design, and logic control structures. Upon completion, students should be able to use top-down algorithm design and implement algorithmic solutions in a programming language.  This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Mathematics (Quantitative).

This course covers the introduction of the tools and resources available to students in programming, mark-up language, and services on the Internet. Topics include standard mark-up language Internet services, creating web pages, using search engines, file transfer programs; and database design and creation with DBMS products. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of programming tools, deploy a web-site with mark-up tools, and create a simple database table.

This course introduces students to the Network concepts, including networking terminology and protocols, local and wide area networks, and network standards. Emphasis is placed on securing information systems and the various implementation policies. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic tasks related to networking mathematics, terminology, media, and protocols.

This course is designed to develop the ability to produce clear writing in a variety of genres and formats using a recursive process. Emphasis includes inquiry, analysis, effective use of rhetorical strategies, thesis development, audience awareness, and revision. Upon completion, students should be able to produce unified, coherent, well-developed essays using standard written English. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course that satisfies English Composition.

This course introduces Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) standard client-side Internet programming using industry-established practices. Topics include JavaScript, markup elements, stylesheets, validation, accessibility, standards, and browsers. Upon completion, students should be able to develop hand-coded web pages using current markup standards. Emphasis is placed on HTML with a secondary focus on CSS.

This course introduces database design and creation using a DBMS product. Emphasis is placed on data dictionaries, normalization, data integrity, data modeling, and creation of simple tables, queries, reports, and forms. Upon completion, students should be able to design and implement normalized database structures by creating simple database tables, queries, reports, and forms.

This course provides an activity-based approach that develops measurement skills and mathematical literacy using technology to solve problems for non-math intensive programs. Topics include unit conversions and estimation within a variety of measurement systems; ratio and proportion; basic geometric concepts; financial literacy; and statistics including measures of central tendency, dispersion, and charting of data.  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the use of mathematics and technology to solve practical problems and to analyze and communicate results. 

This course introduces the creation of web graphics and addressing problems peculiar to WWW display using appropriate software. Topics include web graphics file types, optimization, RGB color, web typography, elementary special effects, transparency, animation, slicing, basic photo manipulation, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to create graphics, such as animated banners, buttons, backgrounds, logos, and manipulate photographic images for Web delivery. Emphasis is placed on graphic design principles and industry-standard Adobe software.

This course introduces students to the server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language PHP. Emphasis is placed on programming techniques required to create dynamic web pages using PHP scripting language features. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, test, debug, and create a dynamic web site using the PHP scripting language.

This course introduces intermediate to advanced web design techniques. Topics include customer expectations, advanced markup language, multimedia technologies, usability and accessibility practices, and techniques for the evaluation of web design. Upon completion, students should be able to employ advanced design techniques to create high impact and highly functional web sites.

This course provides instruction and experience in preparation and delivery of speeches within a public setting and group discussion. Emphasis is placed on research, preparation, delivery, and evaluation of informative, persuasive, and special occasion public speaking. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare and deliver well-organized speeches and participate in a group discussion with appropriate audiovisual support. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course that satisfies Communication.

The course introduces the role of IT in managing business processes and the need for business processes and IT alignment. Emphasis is placed on the industry need for understanding business challenges and developing/managing information systems to contribute to the decision-making process based on these challenges. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the ‘hybrid business manager’ and the potential offered by new technology and systems. Students will acquire the skills to prepare themselves and their work for a career in the information technology field.

This course is designed to develop SQL programming proficiency. Emphasis is placed on data definition, data manipulation, and data control statements as well as on report generation. Upon completion, students should be able to write programs which create, update and produce reports.

Emphasis is placed on the relationship of design principles to various art forms including but not limited to sculpture, painting, and architecture. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and analyze a variety of artistic styles, periods, and media. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course that satisfies Humanities/Fine Arts.

This course introduces students to web design for mobile devices. Topics include planning and effective mobile Web site, industry-standard Mobile Markup Language, CSS3, multimedia, m-commerce, social media, testing, and publishing. Upon completion, students should be able to plan, develop, test, and publish Web content designed for mobile devices.

This course covers advanced programming skills required to design Internet applications. Emphasis is placed on programming techniques required to support Internet applications. Upon completion, students should be able to design, code, debug, and document Internet-based programming solutions to various real-world problems using an appropriate programming language.

This course introduces students to Content Management Systems (CMS) designed for the publication of Web content to Web sites. Topics include individual user accounts, administration menus, RSS-feeds, customizable layout, flexible account privileges, logging, blogging systems, creating online forums, and modules. Upon completion, students should be able to register and maintain individual user accounts and create a business website and/or an interactive community website.

This course introduces dynamic (database-driven) website development. Topics include the use of basic database CRUD statements (create, read, update and delete) incorporated into web applications, as well as in software architecture principles. Upon completion, students should be able to design and develop database-driven web applications according to industry standards.

This course provides an overview of the scientific study of human behavior. Topics include history, methodology, biopsychology, sensation, perception, learning, motivation, cognition, abnormal behavior, personality theory, social psychology, and other relevant topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the science of psychology. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course that satisfies Social/Behavioral Sciences.

This course introduces students to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and web analytics. Topics include Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay Per Click advertising (PPC), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), web analytics, eye-tracking software and email marketing. Upon completion, students should be able to set up, monitor and maintain SEO optimized websites; and develop strategies for online marketing and advertising plans.

This course will explore, discuss, and research emerging technologies in the web arena. Emphasis is placed on exposure to up-and-coming technologies relating to the web, providing hands-on experience, and discussion of practical implications of these emerging fields. Upon completion, students should be able to articulate issues relating to these technologies.

This course provides an opportunity to complete a significant Web technologies project from the design phase through implementation with minimal instructor support. Emphasis is placed on project definition, documentation, installation, testing, presentation, and training. Upon completion, students should be able to complete an Internet project from the definition phase through implementation.
