How to Get a Student ID Card
You can request a Student ID card online by completing the Student ID Card Request Form:
- You will use your full A-B Tech email address and password to log in to the form
- The form will ask for both of the following:
- A clear, front-facing photo of your head, plain background, no hats, no filters
- A photo of your government-issued ID
- IDs can be requested online or in person but must be picked up in person. We no longer mail IDs.
- You will need to present a government-issued photo ID to pick up your Student ID card
** If you are a CCP High School student or a Transitional Studies (ESL / ELA / GED / ABE) student - Be sure to obtain your Student ID number from your coordinator, advisor, or liaison **
Student ID Card Use for Voting
Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) student IDs are approved for voting in North Carolina. Here’s how to obtain and use your student ID for voting:
- Get Your Student ID:
- Visit our Student ID Cards page for instructions.
- You need a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver's license, passport, or state ID). Birth certificates and Social Security cards are not acceptable.
- IDs can be requested online or in person but must be picked up in person. We no longer mail IDs.
- Eligibility:
- Ensure you are registered or pre-registered for classes.
- Preferred Names:
- Preferred names on student IDs cannot be used for voting unless they are legal variations of your name (e.g., Bill for William). IDs may include legal middle names but not informal names (e.g., Frog, Pug).
- Complete the Preferred First Name Request Form if needed.
- Voter Information:
- Ensure your student ID complies with State Board of Elections guidelines. Visit NCSBE Voting Information for details.
Cost
There is no charge for the first student ID card. If you already have a card and lose it, there will be a $10 charge for a replacement. You can pay for the replacement student ID card online.
Library Card
Your student ID card is also your library card. The library-activated photo ID card can be used to check out materials, use the research computers, and access reserve items.

Bus Discount
Currently enrolled students (curriculum, Continuing Education, and GED) can purchase a one-month Asheville Transit pass for $10 at the Roberson building, located at 93 Victoria Road on the main Asheville campus. A regular one-month Asheville Transit pass is $20 if purchased from the Transit Center. Bus passes are usually available for the month on the last day of the previous month or the first day of the current month.
