You might have an intriguing premise for your short story and a deeply relatable main character. Maybe you know how your story ends, or how hard the middle part will hit. But you’re faced with giving your fictional people inner lives, of writing emotion in a way that isn’t cold or corny or obvious. You’ve heard the old creative-writing adage "show, don’t tell" -- but what does it really mean, and how is "showing" achieved? How do you believably convey love, grief or (hardest of all) happiness? In this four-week class with international award-winning author and editor Melanie McGee Bianchi, you will sift through good and bad examples of emotion in literature, considering excerpts from contemporary commercial and literary fiction and elite classics. Discover how to make your readers feel what you’re feeling.
