Trimming and maintenance of the equine hoof are crucial to the well-being and longevity of animals. Local farrier and instructor David King introduces students to proper trimming and equine hoof health basics. This class covers basic hoof anatomy, mechanics, tool options/usage, theory/practice of safe trimming techniques, and common hoof ailments with two days of live animal practice. Lecture takes place Tuesday nights at the A-B Tech Madison campus. Live practice activity at local partner Heart of Horse Sense on Saturdays. Required Book: Horse Trimming Made Simple, 2nd edition, by Dennis Cappel (ISBN: 978-1793446183) No experience necessary. All tools provided. Release waiver and assumption of risk required. Be prepared to bend or stoop for extended periods. Wear appropriate clothing for variable outdoor weather and stout closed-toe footwear when working with horses.
