Prison Education

Through its Higher Education in Prison program, A-B Tech provides incarcerated individuals with opportunities to pursue high school equivalency education, college academic credentials, and workforce training. Offerings include, among others, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training, an Associate in Applied Science in Social and Human Services, and a Diploma in Electrical Systems Technology. Beyond academic achievement, the program focuses on preparing students for successful reentry into their communities and the workforce by equipping them with valuable skills, credentials, and opportunities for personal growth. Research consistently demonstrates that participation in correctional education programs is associated with lower recidivism rates and improved employment outcomes following release.

The program operates at Western Correctional Center for Women in Swannanoa, where students have demonstrated significant academic success. In recent years, numerous students have earned degrees, diplomas, and certificates, and participated in A-B Tech's commencement ceremonies. In 2025, graduates from Western Correctional Center for Women also received special recognition from North Carolina Governor Josh Stein in acknowledgment of their accomplishments.
