Phlebotomy

* PBT-3022 Phlebotomy Experience Hours: 180 total (Class / Lab 80 hours, Clinic 100 hours)

Prerequisites: Enrollment in the Phlebotomy program

This is a Certificate-level course

Lecture/Lab training

This course provides instruction in the skills needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques.

Clinical training

This portion of the course provides supervised experience in the performance of venipuncture and microcollection techniques in a clinical facility. Emphasis is placed on patient interaction and application of universal precautions, proper collection techniques, special procedures, specimen handling, and data management. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in various health care settings.
